The responsibility of being hopeful.

Charlie Hewitt, b.1946, is an American painter, printmaker, and public artist. Hopeful, 2019, is an illuminated public sculpture which has been displayed in over 20 states, and even made an appearance at Joe Biden’s 2021 presidential inauguration. For Hewitt, the design and message of this iconic piece speak to a more optimistic time in America, when the highway was the frontier and the country was excited by possibility and promise.

PIeces of Hewitt’s work are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library. He has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States.
