ABOUT
Charlie Hewitt, b.1946, is an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and public artist. His works are part of the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, New York Public Library, and Library of Congress, among others. He has also been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
Hewitt is renowned for his fearless approach in the studio and all aspects of life.
After decades of living in downtown Manhattan, Hewitt and his wife, fellow artist Kate Carey, returned to Hewitt’s home state of Maine in 2010 in search of community. He has since been participating in developing and engaging communities from his hometown in Lewiston to Portland and all the way to Bangor.
In January 2023, he was the first artist in Maine to have a blockchain Non-Fungible Token art exhibition at Moss Galleries in downtown Portland titled “Bright Screens and Electric Dreams” in partnership with WEX and United Way.
Hewitt has been constructing two workshop studios, with the intention of fostering opportunities for community creativity and interaction. The Electric Garage is being developed in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the Electric Greenhouse is located in Portland, Maine.
Charlie Hewitt: Left of the Turnpike was an exhibition of Hewitt's dynamic, imaginative paintings, sculpture, prints, and neon constructions.
